Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was an Indian spiritual leader who gained worldwide recognition as the founder of the Transcendental Meditation technique. Born in 1918 in central India, he initially studied physics at Allahabad University before devoting himself to the teachings of his spiritual master, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati. Maharishi became known as Maharishi (“great sage”) after being named the Shankaracharya (spiritual leader) of Jyotir Math in the Himalayas.
In 1955, Maharishi began teaching Transcendental Meditation (TM), a simple, natural technique that allows the mind to settle into a state of deep inner peace and restful alertness. TM gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, attracting followers from various walks of life, including celebrities and intellectuals.
Maharishi’s teachings extended beyond meditation, encompassing a vision of global peace, harmony, and enlightenment. He founded organizations such as the Global Country of World Peace and Maharishi International University, promoting principles of holistic education, sustainable living, and conflict resolution.
Throughout his life, Maharishi emphasized the importance of individual and collective consciousness in creating a better world. His legacy continues to inspire millions of people worldwide to explore the depths of their inner selves and cultivate a more harmonious relationship with themselves and the world around them.
